Let Us Have Peace: Ulysses S. Grant and the Politics of War and Reconstruction, 1861-1868
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (October, 1991)
Author: Brooks D. Simpson
Average review score:

An excellent book for the serious student of Reconstruction
As a person with some knowledge of the Civil War and Reconstruction, I found LET US HAVE PEACE extremely well written, very readable and highly informative. However, I do not believe that it is for the casual reader. The book deals with a very specific time and a very specific subject: Grant's transition from general to president. The author shows Grant's involvement in Recontruction and the peace process before the end of the war and during the Johnson administration. For example, I was unaware that Grant was secretary of war after the removal of Stanton and his role in the controvery over the Tenure in Office Act. The book gives an interesting view of Grant's role in the impeachment of President Johnson and shows the interworking of the relationship between Grant and other generals, espcially William T. Sherman. I found the chapter on the rise of Grant as a presidential candidate extremely interesting contradicitng the general consensu that he was an shoe in for the nomination.

The epilogue which is historiographic in nature was very helpful in terms of putting Simpson's thesis in context.

Once again, for the student who already has knowledge of the cast of characters and the interworkings of the politics of Reconstruction, this is a must read. It was also refreshing to read a book on Grant that avoids references to his drinking. As I recall there are three references in the entire book and they are well placed and put in proper context.

The Libidinal Economy (Theories of Contemporary Culture Series)
Published in Paperback by Indiana University Press (January, 1993)
Authors: Jean Francois Lyotard, Iain Hamilton Grant, and Dwight H. Judy
Average review score:

good stuff
An important work by the late, missed and brilliant Francois Lyotard. An effective response to Deleuze and Guattari's "Anti-Oedipus", Lyotard almost succeeds in showing the libidinal drives underlying not only the economy but a critique of Marxism too. Here while seemingly accepting Freud's idea of the libido, Lyotard shows how much more complex and satisfying his take of society is compared to the cumbersome and unsuccessful try by Deleuze and Guattari to combine Marx and Freud. Lyotard uses ideas from Bataille to stress the organic development of man and society in contrast to the mechanistic structures of "Anti-Oedipus" which is reminiscent of most of the French rationalist school who want to reduce everything to equations of either bodies without organs, or a formula by Descartes.

The Little Book Of Baseball
What a great book for those parents entering into the Little League playing field. The camp suggestions are great and helpful for parents trying to navigate through what is good for their child. The behavior rules for parents were my favorite part though. Every coach should mandate parents reading it so there would be less trouble out on the playing fields. Great Book!!!!!

What a Find!
If you have a young child playing baseball, BUY THIS BOOK! My young son wanted to go to baseball camp and I found a great one in my state using this book. He's so excited to be going to a college for baseball camp this summer. The Little Book of Baseball has the most comprehensive listing of summer camps I've found anywhere. Without it I'd still be looking!

This book is wonderful for all parents of young baseball players! After seeing the book I bought, our coach plans to buy one for all the parents on the team. It has rules, diagrams, bleacher and umpire etiquette, important advice from coaches and lots more. My kids especially loved the jokes and trivia that is sprinkled throughout the book, and the websites. Next year, we're going to plan our vacation around one of the baseball hotspots listed in the book.

A great find! Nothing else like it out there!

As a teacher just beginning the looping process this book has been extremely helpful. It is quick and easy to read and will continue to be a valuable resource. It addresses questions not only from an educator's standpoint but also a parent's standpoint. It will continue to be of use to me before, during, and after the looping process begins.

The Lord of the Horizon
Published in Hardcover by Ayer Co Pub (01 January, 1980)
Author: Joan Marshall Grant
Average review score:

High-Stakes Royal Intrigue and Spiritual Enlightenment.
Intrigue at the highest levels of royalty...a ghost story set in the burial chambers of a pharaoh's pyramid...a mystery to test the mind and loyalty of a hero and determine the fate of Egypt herself - these are the stakes at risk in the twin books EYES OF HORUS and LORD OF THE HORIZON, by Joan Grant.

These two books were written to be published as one, but: The year was 1942 and author and publisher were in wartime England, where there was a severe paper shortage.  So, the book was made into two, with one published in 1942 and the second in 1944.  Each is complete and easy to read, but to experience the vast sweep of historical significance in the events of the stories, one should read first HORUS and then HORIZON.

Both are recommended for all who are interested in spiritual enlightenment, ancient Egypt, and grand writing by an author with a sweeping command of language, history and imagery.
